Sand Tray Therapy
Symbolic and Experiential Processing
Sand Tray Therapy is a powerful experiential therapy approach that allows individuals to explore and process emotions, memories, and life experiences through symbolic scenes created in sand. At Worth It Therapy Services, we use sand tray therapy to help clients access deeper emotional insight, safely explore difficult experiences, and develop new perspectives on their inner world.

What Is Sand Tray Therapy?
Sand tray therapy involves a shallow tray filled with sand and a collection of miniature figures and objects. These miniatures may include people, animals, nature elements, buildings, spiritual symbols, and objects that represent themes such as safety, conflict, protection, connection, or change.
During a session, clients are invited to create a scene in the sand using whichever figures feel meaningful or intuitive in the moment. There is no right or wrong way to build a tray. The tray becomes a visual representation of internal experiences. Clients and therapists can observe the scene together, noticing patterns, relationships, distance between figures, and emotional themes that emerge through the arrangement.
How Does Sand Tray Therapy Work?
Sand tray therapy engages more than traditional verbal conversation. By involving imagery, movement, and touch, it activates parts of the brain connected to memory, emotion, and sensory experience.
In a typical session, clients spend time selecting miniature figures and arranging them in the sand to create a scene. Some people talk while they build. Others prefer quiet reflection until the tray is complete. The therapist observes the process carefully and may ask gentle questions about what stands out in the scene or how different elements feel to the client.
Because the experience is symbolic rather than purely verbal, many people find that sand tray therapy allows them to approach difficult material in a way that feels safer and more manageable. Over time, clients often notice that their trays begin to change. Scenes that once felt chaotic may become more organized. Isolated figures may move closer together. Symbols of threat may be joined by symbols of protection or support. These shifts can mirror meaningful emotional changes taking place in the client’s life.
