About the Book

True to You: A Guide to The Theory and Practice of Creating Authentic Relationships by Dr. Kathleen Smith is a compelling self-help book that addresses the struggle many people face in balancing their composed outward personas with the inner turmoil of self-doubt and anxiety. The book guides readers on how to stop relying on external validation and start living according to their own principles. Through a mix of storytelling, scientific insights, and humor, Dr. Smith explains how to break free from unproductive relationship patterns, develop a strong sense of self, and build authentic and rewarding relationships.

The book provides actionable steps and exercises to help readers interrupt patterns that keep them stuck, rely less on praise and approval from others, and build a life rooted in their own best thinking. Drawing on examples from her therapy practice, Dr. Smith helps readers understand why we often borrow confidence and calmness from others and how we can start living more authentically. Through a blend of storytelling, scientific insights, and practical tools, the book empowers individuals to set true boundaries, build healthier relationships, and focus on self-growth rather than being overly attuned to others’ anxieties.
